Introduction To Learning
Introduction to learning-Rachel Rudd
My experience with learning has always been very positive and enjoyable. I have always loved learning and I enjoy expanding my knowledge daily. I have always enjoyed school and learning new things from the many different subjects I studied. Not only have I enjoyed learning in the classroom, but I also love learning outside of the classroom. I have played sports since I was six years old, and I have learned so much from the different teams I have played on. I have been taught how to work with a team, how to work for what I want, how to set goals, and then work to achieve those goals. I have learned to overcome adversity, and how to confront difficult situations. I have learned that with the right mindset we can do so much more than we believe we can. I have learned that I am blessed to have the family and friends that are in my life. I have learned a great deal during my lifetime. I have learned much in the classroom, however, I have learned an equal amount from the school environment. Being in an eclectic and diverse academic environment has taught me a great deal about life and how it works. My learning has happened both inside the classroom and outside of it, as I have learned from so many different people over the years with different cultures and perspectives. Learning is something we do our whole lives, not just while we are in school. Learning is enriched when we interact with a variety of different ideas, people, and places.
James Schall, author of “Artes Liberales”, said “liberal arts are not simply a body of books we read, but a way of life enabling us to be free enough to know the truth of things.”(Schall pg 24). I believe that he meant by reading and studying the liberal arts we could expand our minds and how we view the world. I believe he thought that education and learning were necessary for having a good view of the world and how it works. I believe that Schall thought the liberal arts would help people be able to study other subjects and improve quality of life, because he wrote, “the liberal arts have history. To be free we must continue to study them.” (Schall pg 30). He went on to mention the Greeks’ and Romans’ literacy, political traditions, and how they, “reflect into the heart of things that cannot be duplicated.” (Schall pg 30). I feel that Schall believed history helps us build our studies and advanced learning as he stated, “The initial sources were enriched by the later ones.”(Schall pg 31). I believe he meant that by studying, we improve our mental states, and we build on and expand the past knowledge of the subject we are studying. Schall stated he agreed with Aristotle when he wrote, “We do not make ourselves human beings, as Aristotle affirmed, though we do make ourselves to be good or bad humans.” (Schall pg 32). With that statement I believe they both agreed that humans have choices, and those choices demonstrate who we are more than anything we say. I believe that choosing to be educated means we will have a better understanding of our choices and the outcomes that will follow. Education can make people better humans, because it allows us to see more views of the world. Therefore, we should all try to be as educated as possible. With hard work, dedication, and a goal oriented education, we can all be better humans than we believe we can be. Schall stated, “Liberal education is the effort to experience the proper pleasure due to knowing.” (Schall pg 33). My understanding of this statement is that the liberal arts, as well as all other subjects, are enjoyable simply because they give you knowledge you would not have without those subjects. They give you useful knowledge, and they also give you a pleasurable subject to study. We should not get an education simply because society tells us we need a college diploma. We should get an education because, “What we are contains this mind with its capacity to know all that is.” (Schall pg 37). Schall meant that we have a right to be who we are, but we should take full advantage of our our mind’s capabilities. I believe Schall thought that studying the liberal arts meant accepting different viewpoints, accepting other people’s work, and being diverse in your education. Schall said, “to be liberally educated, to practice the truly liberal arts is to be open to something that is not ourselves.” (Schall pg 42). The liberal arts, also called the “freeing arts”, are mind opening and view changing, diverse, and should be held in the highest respect. We are blessed by being able to receive an extraordinary Christian education, based on strong values, and diversity. I have truly enjoyed my education so far, and I am sure I will enjoy continuing it, and taking my education to new horizons.
